Bluffton Heritage Discovery Day on October 14, 2017

Kick off the Historic Bluffton Arts and Seafood Festival with a leisurely and fun journey through Bluffton’s past.  Learn about it’s very beginnings at St. Luke’s Methodist Church.  Afterwards, make your way to Old Town and enjoy lunch and shopping in any of our fine restaurants and shops.  Then head to the historic Campbell Chapel AME Church to hear a presentation about some of our historic properties and the clues they offer to understanding the past.  End the day at a gospel concert and an authentic Gullah dinner. 

Our itinerary is as follows:

  • 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM: Presentation and tour at St. Luke’s Methodist Church
    St. Luke's Methodist Church and Graveyard is rich in the history of Bluffton.  It dates back to the 1767 with the original Church built in 1788.  In the graveyard lies the grave of Mary Bull who died in 1793.  The National Register of Historic Places included St. Luke's on its list of notable places.
    • 10:00 - 10:15   Greeting our guest in fellowship hall with refreshments.
    • 10:15 - 10:35   A docent will speak about the history and construction of the Church in the sanctuary.
    • 10:40 - 11:00    Several docents will be scattered throughout the graveyard, giving brief biographies of some of the people buried here.
    • 11:00 -Noon   A repeat of the 10:00 AM program, allowing visitors who arrive after 10:00 to catch up on anything they missed or other visitors to start at 11:00.
  • 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM: Time on your own to explore Bluffton
  • 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM: Presentation at the historic Campbell Chapel AME Church
    Learn about Lowcountry history through Bluffton’s historic sites.  This presentation will take you on a virtual tour of some historic sites that provide clues to Lowcounty history and cultural heritage.  After the presentation, walk around Old Town and see some of these sites on your own.  We will also discuss our goal of nominating Campbell Chapel AME Church to the National Register of Historic Places.
  • 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM: Gospel concert at Campbell Chapel AME Church
  • 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM: Authentic Gullah dinner and storytelling at Campbell Chapel AME Church Fellowship Hall
